Press Release
25
October 2002 For Immediate Release Subject: Rental Inspection
Fees in Des Moines - Part 2
Des Moines, Iowa - The
proposed inspection fees will be far in excess of like fees in Polk
County and the suburbs. Just look:
For single family
dwellings in the City of Des Moines the proposal is $100 for 36
months or $33.33 per year. West Des Moines charges 40% less than
that; Urbandale charges 89% less and Ankeny, Polk City, and Windsor
Heights charges less than one-half of what Des Moines is proposing.
Cedar Rapids, the second largest city in Iowa charges only $6.48 per
year. Only three cities in Iowa charge more than Des
Moines.
For duplexes, Des Moines is proposing $150 for a
three year period or $50 per year. Ankeny, Polk City, Windsor
Heights and West Des Moines charge less than $21 per year. Urbandale
charges less than $17 per year.
For a twelve unit apartment
building, the City of Des Moines is proposing $400 for a 24 month
period or $200 per year. Urbandale is charging $145.44 per year,
Ankeny, Polk City, Windsor Heights and West Des Moines is charging
less than $80 per year.
Creating such an unlevel playing
field with the suburbs will only lead to driving out more landlords
and tenants looking for a fair shake. Des Moines is trying to come
up with ways to make up for its deficit spending of $9,000.000, but
this proposal is as bad as charging those living in the suburbs more
for attending events in Des Moines when the suburban governments
already sub-size Des Moines.
