Our guest speaker will be Ben Bishop, Administrator, Neighborhood Inspection Division with the City of Des Moines. There are some proposed changes to the Des Moines Rental Housing Inspection Code to be discussed that you will want to be aware of. Even if you don’t have rental housing in the City of Des Moines you could still be affected. Sometimes other cities look at Des Moines codes to pave the way for their rules and regulations.

ILA SPRING EDUCATIONAL SEMINAR AND TRADE SHOW

To provide you with even more valuable information, the ILA Spring Educational Seminar and Trade Show will be adding an additional educational seminar during the afternoon of Wednesday, April 20th, titled "Best-Qualified Tenant Selection 101."

The seminar provides in-depth training on advertising vacancies, pre-screening applicants, the how-to of the application process, final screening and selecting the best qualified tenants. Understand your legal rights and obligations on all Credit, and National Criminal and Civil history checks, including National Sex Offender Registry and Multi-State Eviction checks is of the utmost importance. This part will be an in depth explanation of what you legally can and cannot consider in your selection decision! Wednesday afternoon's information is a real opportunity to learn landlord responsibilities and to best protect your return-on-investment.

Thursday, April 21st includes the full-day ILA Educational Seminar and Trade Show. On legal issues, we will have an update on the "step by step" process of correctly serving notices with attorney Mark Hanson. The "State of the Rental Housing Market Economy in Iowa" will be presented by Andy Westlake of Peoples Management Group. A full overview of understanding the value of Credit Reports, drafting credit criteria, processing Social Traces, and appropriate pre-screening of applicants will be presented by Dan Firestone of CIC. ILA Lobbyist Joe Kelly will bring us up to date on 2011 legislation. January Lunch & Learn

The speaker for the January Lunch & Learn will be Ed Leedom, 1^st Vice President of the Iowa Association of Code Enforcement.  He will talk about rental housing code enforcement. Landlords’ Day on the Hill
